Going to look at this next weekend . Might be the one , beautiful location , well known local brand , good wine . I’ve had a look at the financials the agent sent me . No red flags .

    We go see it tomorrow .
    My wife is very excited , we’ve looked at a lot of places over the last 5 years .
    I’ve driven past this one many times , and we’ve looked at several in the area .
    This is one of the original 4 on the island . Most of the others were planted in 2004-2007
    So this one is a decade older .
    He has a full set up producing grafted vines and is known as the guru when it comes to selecting vines that will do well on the island .

    I must admit being 3 kilometers from a marina where I can keep my sailboat is a nice plus .
    I’ve never really loved the Okanagan , BC’s most well known wine region .
    I figure I can grow whites , Pinot and some Cabernet Foch and always buy big reds from the Okanagan and Similikimeen valleys .

    Looks great Zac. Was in that area this past spring and it looks tremendous. Mountains, ocean, moderate climate, wine culture… what else could you ask for. Curious to know how ‘cool’ of a climate is it on the Island for the vinifera reds? The growing season must be long in comparison to where I live (Ontario) and even we make some good reds (cabs, syrah, etc.) in warm years. And what is disease pressure like with all of that humidity?

    It’s generally pretty humid although the Cowichan valley is in a rain shadow .
    The island doesn’t do reds that well , Pinot noir is the most common .
    This vineyard has some Foch and the blattner cross Cabernet Foch , we had a bottle last night , I think the cab Foch is pretty good and probably the red best suited to the island , you don’t have to spray it much as its very fungi resistant .
    It ripens early .

    There is some Merlot but it seems they make a rose from it , so that gives you an indication what you can’t do .
    There are some people growing zweigelt successfully , but I think the cab Foch makes a better wine .
    Whites grow very well , and I’ve got methode traditional bubbly dreams .

    Gene, what are the DAP phobics using instead of Fermaid K?
    Like you, and many others, I start with Fermaid O and switch to Fermaid K.
    You’ll be able to tell if someone is from WMT, they’re usually the ones using yeast energizer instead.

    Some Guys are using only organic. So they only use Fermaid O. But they better use GoFerm Evolution and with high brix I think they run an increased risk.
